MM MAGNETODROME

The Magnetodrome is an instrument designed for microscopic discrimination and manipulation of small magnetic particles and magnetic microorganisms. It consists of an inverted microscope combined with a set of 4 small electromagnets controlled by special software.

Deliberate homogeneous magnetic fields of up to 1200 Oe and gradient fields of 800 Oe/mm can be applied.

The Magnetodrome with the four electromagnets placed around the sample in the middle is shown in the image above. A video camera is installed on top of the microscope objective to record image data for further analysis.

The pole pieces of the four electromagnets center around the sample carrier.

The analysis software allows to control the individual parameters of a measurement. Image processing operations like thresholding and frame subtraction allow detailed inspection of the movements of a sample in the electromagnetic field.

The video shows the effect of a circular magnetic field on a magnetococcus in water. The path of the bacterium is traced using the image analysis functions of the Magnetodrome software.
